Groove Etude in Rondo Form

For Viola and Harpsichord

Commissioned by Bryon Schenkman & Friends

Groove Etude in Rondo Form is the first in a set of “groove etudes” written for a solo instrument or duo, the basic premise revolving around the musicians(‘) ability to lock into a groove. Because this is a characteristic that is not largely taught in music conservatories (outside of jazz), and because it is a hallmark of my own music, I found it necessary to provide opportunities to help with this deficit. The goal is for the performers to move from the precision of counting, to that of feeling the groove.
